Tuttle Creek
As a celebration of the end of warm weather, I spent labor day at Tuttle Creek lake in Manhattan, KS. The main festivities were boating, camping, and jeeping at the nearby ORV park. I didn’t take a whole lot of pictures, but I have a few that I think are worth sharing.
Sunset
We camped on the top of a hill located right on the shore of the lake. This vantage point provided some great views of the lake, including the local sail boat club. I really liked the way the sail boats looked, especially as the sun set right behind their mooring spot. I also kind of like the lens flare that’s in the center of the image. I can see how they could be annoying in some images, but I think it looks fine in this one. It took a lot of trial and error to get a decent shot of these boats, as there were a lot of distracting trees in the way. I tried to do some HDR photography here, but haven’t quite got the hang of it yet. I’m sure I’ll have an entire post dedicated to that at some point!
Boating
Shout out to my uncle for bringing his boat. Not only is it a ton of fun to take out on the lake, but it turns out to be a pretty cool subject! In this picture I turned the camera at a slight angle and shot the sun through the ski tower. It’s almost like a light dutch angle!
Night
The stars were fantastic at the lake, and this inspired me to try to take some night shots. I took lots of shots with 30 second exposures. As it happens, 30 seconds is not enough time to get very detailed shots. To compensate, my camera spiked the ISO up to about 5000. I haven’t figured out how to use bulb mode on my camera yet. I need to either figure out the android app, or purchase a remote trigger. The high iso rating made the images come out rather grainy and not that great. I figured I might as well do something interesting with them so I made this one black and white. I think the grain kind of adds to the picture and makes it look kind of old and artistic. In the background you can see the glow from nearby Manhattan.
